Zurich University Hospital reviews deaths at heart clinic

Zurich University Hospital (USZ) has decided to review all deaths in cardiac surgery in the years 2016 to 2020. It set up a working group for this purpose. Francesco Maisano was head of the clinic during these years.
The University Hospital confirmed a corresponding report on Wednesday by the "Regionaljournal Zürich-Schaffhausen" on Radio SRF1.
The first media reports claiming that the mortality rate in the USZ cardiac clinic was higher than in other hospitals appeared back in 2018. A whistleblower then contacted the hospital management and criticized the clinic director at the time, Francesco Maisano. There were unnecessary complications and falsified reports.
150 deaths in the heart clinic
Maisano finally had to leave the hospital in 2020. His temporary successor recently said at a court hearing that, according to him, 150 patients who died during heart surgery could have survived. He made serious accusations against his predecessor Maisano. Maisano now works in Italy.
