A heart-wrenching incident occurred in Rüeterswil SG on Thursday evening, involving a 20-year-old driver and his 24-year-old colleague. In a shocking act of desertion, the driver left his colleague critically injured in the car following an accident, leading to a tragic aftermath.
The St. Gallen cantonal police detailed the accident in a statement released on Friday. According to the report, the young driver was attempting to drift on the snow-covered Atzmännig parking lot when he lost control of his vehicle. The car spun 180 degrees and slid down a 10-meter slope, ending up overturned in the Goldingerbach stream. In a bewildering decision, the 20-year-old driver managed to extricate himself from the wreckage and fled the scene, leaving his injured colleague behind.
The emergency unfolded further when a third party alerted the police to the accident. Upon arrival, the emergency services worked to free the trapped 24-year-old passenger from the submerged car. Despite being rushed to the hospital in critical condition, the young man tragically passed away a short time later.
In a subsequent development, the fleeing driver, a Swiss national, made contact with the police by telephone. He was arrested following this communication.
