Swiss Retail Sales Rise Significantly in April 2024

Swiss retail sales in April 2024 increased significantly compared to last year, reversing a recent downward trend, with notable growth in the non-food sector.

In April, Swiss retail sales were significantly higher than a year ago, following a recent downward trend. Among other things, sales outside the food sector increased.
In April 2024, sales at Swiss retailers rose by 2.3% in nominal terms compared to the previous year, according to provisional results published by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) on Friday. The trend is adjusted for sales and public holiday effects.
In real terms – i.e. taking into account factors such as inflation – sales even increased by 2.7% year-on-year after adjusting for calendar effects.
If the sales trend at petrol stations is excluded, sales climbed by 2.5% in nominal terms (+3.0% in real terms). Retail sales of food, beverages and tobacco increased by 2.7% in nominal terms (+1.7% in real terms), while the non-food sector recorded a 2.6% increase in sales (+4.0% in real terms).
Also up on the previous month
Compared to the previous month of March, retail sales increased by 0.5% in nominal and seasonally adjusted terms, and by 0.2% in real terms. Excluding petrol stations, sales rose by 0.4% in nominal terms compared to the previous month (+0.2% in real terms).
However, contrary to the general trend, retail sales of food, beverages and tobacco fell by 0.4% month-on-month (-1.0% in real terms). In contrast, the non-food sector recorded a nominal increase of 1.8% (+1.8% in real terms).
The Federal Statistical Office’s retail sales statistics are based on a random sample of around 3,000 companies. It is a monthly survey, with small businesses being asked about their monthly turnover figures on a quarterly basis.
