Almost 90 percent of them took at least one trip with one or more overnight stays away from home in 2022. This means an increase of 29 percent compared to 2021.

The total number of these trips last year was 21.1 million. That is almost the same number as in the period immediately before the Covid-19 pandemic, as the Federal Statistical Office (BFS) announced on Thursday.

In 2019 there were 21.9 million trips. Men, people over 65 and German-speaking Swiss were particularly keen to travel.

On average, each person living in Switzerland undertook 2.6 overnight trips and 8.0 day trips in 2022. 40 percent of trips with overnight stays and 92 percent of day trips took place in Switzerland.
