Electric vehicles are making inroads in Switzerland, with varying adoption rates across cantons.
Electric cars are still rare on Swiss roads. Currently, 3.5% of registered cars are purely electric, as the online platform Energie Reporter from Energie Schweiz and Geoimpact shows.
There are some major differences between the cantons: with a share of 7% of the car population, the canton of Zug is the leader in electric cars, ahead of Zurich (4.4%) and Vaud (3.7%). Bringing up the rear are the cantons of Uri (2.4 percent), Geneva (2.6 percent) and Neuchâtel (2.6%).
Electric cars are finding more and more buyers in Switzerland, even if growth has slowed recently. Last year, the market share of new cars was almost 21%. Only petrol cars (33%) and hybrids (27%) were more popular.
