According to the federal authorities, just under half of the 86,000 young people in Switzerland started basic vocational training after completing their compulsory schooling. As in previous years, 84 percent of the apprenticeship positions offered were filled.
Of the young people, 36 percent opted for the general education path and 18 percent for an intermediate solution, in addition to the 46 percent who began basic vocational training, according to the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) on Friday.
Four out of five young people would have started their preferred training in the summer of 2023. Overall, the training situation following compulsory schooling is satisfactory for young people, the report continues.
Difficulties had been shown by the companies in allocating apprenticeships in the field of economic services such as secretarial services, call centers congress organizers and others. By August, 40 percent of the apprenticeships offered had remained open, he said. In the construction industry, one in three apprenticeships had remained unfilled, and in the hospitality industry about one in four.
Most frequently, apprenticeships remained unfilled due to a lack of applications. This reason is new: Previously, the companies had stated that they had not been able to fill their apprenticeship positions due to unsuitable applications.
