The Swiss Parliament has approved a law to implement the so-called Burka Initiative, which bans the covering of the face in public places. The law allows for exceptions in places of worship, during carnival celebrations, and for health protection. Authorities may also grant permission for face coverings at demonstrations if necessary for the exercise of freedom of opinion and assembly. The initiative was narrowly approved in March 2021, with 51.2% of the vote in favour. The National Council voted 151 to 29 in favour of the law, with six abstentions, and it is now ready for final approval.
