Basel Councilwoman Eva Herzog Forgoes Federal Council Candidacy

Eva Herzog, a Basel Ständerätin (SP) has confirmed that she will not be running for the federal council seat vacated by Alain Berset. She is in contact with other Basel candidates, but it is a personal decision of hers to focus on the Ständeratspräsidium next year. Beat Jans, the Regierungspräsident of Basel-Stadt, and Nationalrat Mustafa Atici have also expressed interest in the Berset-Nachfolge, but Jans has said he will take until the end of September to decide. Daniel Jositsch, a Zürcher Ständerat, and Matthias Aebischer, a Berner Nationalrat, have both announced their candidacy this month. Last year, Herzog had decided to run for the federal council seat vacated by Simonetta Sommaruga, but she lost to Elisabeth Baume-Schneider.
