On Thursday morning, a fatal car accident occurred on the A1 motorway near Utzenstorf BE. The accident happened in connection with a police control, resulting in a pile-up and a subsequent rear-end collision. The driver of the car was trapped in the vehicle and was later pronounced dead by the Bern Fire Department. The formal identification of the deceased is still pending. The accident caused traffic jams in the morning rush hour and the motorway between Kirchberg BE and Kriegstetten SO in the direction of Zurich had to be closed for several hours for rescue and accident work. The road in the direction of Bern was also briefly closed for the landing of a helicopter. Traffic towards the east was diverted via Biel and Solothurn and the Brünigpass was recommended as an alternative to reach the inner Switzerland. Investigations into the accident are underway under the direction of the regional prosecutor's office Emmental-Oberaargau.
