Initiative to Limit Fireworks Above 100,000 Mark

More than 100,000 people have signed a Swiss citizens' initiative to limit fireworks on 1 August and New Year's Eve. The initiative committee announced on Friday that they had received 101,615 signatures, 83,360 of which had been verified. In order to pass, the initiative needs 100,000 valid signatures. The committee will continue to actively collect signatures until the end of October, when they will submit the initiative to Bern. The initiative aims to protect people and animals from loud noise by prohibiting private individuals from setting off loud fireworks on 1 August and New Year's Eve, allowing them only at regional events. The committee is supported by environmental and animal protection organisations, including the Swiss Animal Protection, Wild Animal Protection Switzerland, Tier im Recht Foundation, Swiss Cynological Society, Pro Natura, Greenpeace Switzerland and the Noise League.
