The Swiss Federal Council has proposed a revised CO2 law to encourage people and businesses to take action on climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by half by 2030 compared to 1990. The Council of States is ready to debate the proposal and the Environment, Spatial Planning and Energy Committee of the Council of States (Urek-S) is largely in agreement with the Federal Council's proposals. However, Urek-S has proposed a stricter target for average emissions from new cars in 2030, which should be no more than 25% of the 2021 value, compared to the Federal Council's proposed 45%. The new law is intended to help Switzerland meet its 2050 net-zero emissions target and ensure a secure energy supply, in line with the Paris Climate Agreement.
