CKW Launches Geothermal Power Plant Project in Lucerne Canton

The Swiss energy company CKW plans to build a geothermal power plant in the canton of Lucerne. The plant will produce electricity for 4000 households and heat for 6500 households. The exact location has not yet been determined, but the area of Perlen-Inwil along the A14 motorway is considered to be a good option due to the presence of a muschelkalkschicht, a type of limestone that contains a lot of thermal water. The next step for CKW is to conduct a test drilling to determine the amount of thermal water available. The area also has an existing waste incineration plant and a district heating network that extends to Zug and Lucerne, which will help meet the increasing demand for heat. The project is expected to take around six years to complete and will cost 70 million Swiss francs. Geothermal projects are supported by the Swiss government and CKW believes that accelerating the development of renewable energy sources is necessary to ensure energy security. The drilling technology used is advanced and no significant or damaging ground movements are expected.
