According to Anne Lévy, Director of the Federal Office of Public Health (BAG), the sharp rise in premiums is a warning sign to all. In the future, costs in the health sector must be reduced and unnecessary treatments prevented, she said on Tuesday in front of the media in Bern. "We must better understand the cost increase and draw the necessary conclusions. There is not one cost driver," said Lévy. The reasons for the premium increase are manifold. Among the cost drivers is the encouraging news that we are all living longer, said Lévy. In addition, medical progress is increasing. According to Lévy, the differences between the cantons are largely due to the hospital offer. In addition, the offers are used more, for example physiotherapy. However, part of the cost increase is not explainable. Therefore, the reasons for the increase in costs must still be precisely clarified, said Lévy. With regard to the reserves of the health insurers, Lévy said that they still have enough reserves at the moment. "But the cushion is gone." The solvency of the insurers has therefore decreased.
