Women Represent Approximately One Third of All Council of States Candidacies

The 2021 Swiss Council of States elections have attracted 184 candidates, including 37 incumbents and around a third of them being women. This is roughly the same proportion as in 2019. The canton of Aargau has the highest proportion of female candidates at 70%, followed by Freiburg at 57%. Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Glarus, Graubünden and Nidwalden have no female candidates. The Green Party has the highest proportion of female candidates at 13 out of 21, followed by the Social Democratic Party with 11 out of 21. The Liberal Green Party and the Middle Party both have 8 female candidates out of 16. The average age of the candidates is 50, with the oldest being 81 and the youngest 22. The Green Party has the youngest candidates on average at 42, followed by the Social Democratic Party at 47. The Middle Party has the oldest candidates on average at 57. Two of the 46 seats in the Council of States have already been filled by Daniel Fässler (Middle/AI) and Erich Ettlin (Middle/OW).
