In an interview with the West Swiss ESH-Medien and "La Liberté" on Thursday, Swiss Justice Minister Elisabeth Baume-Schneider sought to reassure the public about the situation at the Swiss-Italian border. She stated that the situation was far from catastrophic, and that the additional personnel sent to the Ticino region were not a large number, but rather a few extra people to help relieve the existing staff. Baume-Schneider also acknowledged the concerns of the people of Chiasso TI, but noted that only 3% of the migrants identified at the southern border applied for asylum in Switzerland. Most, she said, simply wanted to pass through the country. In summary, Baume-Schneider sought to reassure the public that the situation at the Swiss-Italian border was under control, and that the additional personnel sent to the Ticino region were not a large number. She also noted that only a small percentage of migrants identified at the border applied for asylum in Switzerland, with most simply wanting to pass through the country.
