The Swissmedic drug authority has approved an adapted coronavirus vaccine from Moderna. The vaccine is said to be more effective against the currently circulating coronavirus variants "Eris" and "Pirola" than its predecessors. The approval of the new vaccine XBB.1.5 was made as part of an internationally harmonised regulatory process for the simplified approval of new Covid-19 vaccines, Swissmedic announced on Thursday. This method has been established by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and has been used for decades in the annual approval of adapted flu vaccines. Moderna welcomed the approval, as the pharmaceutical company stated in a statement. The approval is important in view of the increasing number of cases at the beginning of the autumn/winter period, Dan Staner, head of Moderna Switzerland, is quoted as saying. According to Moderna, the adapted vaccine has already been approved by the USA, Canada, the European Union, Great Britain, Israel and Taiwan.
