The Swiss Federal Council is planning for the return of refugees from Ukraine, even though an end to the war is not yet in sight. Should the protection status S be lifted, it is the goal of the authorities that as many refugees as possible voluntarily leave Switzerland. On Friday, the Federal Council took note of a provisional concept for the lifting of the status S. At the same time, it assured that the concept is not a prejudice for the lifting of the status S and a safe return to Ukraine is not foreseeable. The Federal Council also wants to coordinate with the EU. If the status S is lifted, the period of time for departure should not be too long or too short, according to the concept. A guideline of six to nine months is mentioned. The willingness of refugees to return depends on the duration of the war, according to the concept. Financial return assistance is envisaged; the concept recommends giving more money to those who leave Switzerland at the beginning of the departure period. For later departures, the amount should be reduced.
