The second Gotthard tunnel works have not damaged the existing tunnel. The works, which were interrupted on 10 September, will resume on Wednesday. The blasting will be done more carefully in the future. The 25-meter-long crack in the tunnel ceiling, which was caused by movements in the mountain, was not caused by the tunnel works. As a precautionary measure, the tunnel works will be done more carefully, with only one meter of rock being blasted per explosion instead of two. The tunnel ceiling elements have also been fixed and given more room to compensate for vibrations. The cost of the repair and safety works is two million francs and the incident will not affect the opening of the second tunnel in 2029.
