On Wednesday afternoon, the police cordoned off the Bundesplatz and the surrounding area due to suspicious objects. The West Wing of the Federal House and the Media Centre were evacuated as a precaution. At around 3 pm, the police gave the all-clear after two suspicious objects were found and examined, which turned out to be harmless. The alarm was triggered shortly before noon. As a result, the Bundesplatz and the surrounding area were cordoned off. For safety reasons, the West Wing of the Federal House and the adjacent Media Centre were temporarily evacuated. Most shops and restaurants in the area remained open. Several police vehicles were deployed and a small command centre was set up. Traffic via Bundesgasse, Kochergasse, Schauplatz- and Amthausgasse was interrupted, but the Bundesterrasse remained open. The session of the Federal Council, which ended at noon, was not affected by the incident. The Federal Council was able to leave the building safely, according to Vice Chancellor and Federal Council spokesman André Simonazzi. It is not uncommon for the Bundesplatz to be closed due to suspicious objects. The last time this happened was about two weeks ago, but the object turned out to be harmless.
