Voters in the canton of Basel-Stadt have elected Eva Herzog (SP, incumbent) to the Council of States. She received a total of 29,208 votes, which was an absolute majority.
Eva Herzog is a member of the Social Democratic Party of Switzerland (SP). She was the incumbent candidate for the Council of States, the upper house of the Swiss Federal Assembly. The election was held on October 20th, 2019.
Herzog was one of four candidates running for the seat. She received a total of 29,208 votes, which was an absolute majority. This was more than double the votes of her closest rival, the Green Party's candidate, who received 13,845 votes.
Herzog has been a member of the Council of States since 2011. She is the first woman to be elected to the Council of States from Basel-Stadt. She is also the first woman to be elected to the Council of States from the canton of Basel-Stadt since the canton was founded in 1833.
Herzog has been a member of the Social Democratic Party since 1991 and has held various positions in the party. She is also a member of the Swiss National Council, the lower house of the Swiss Federal Assembly.
Herzog's election to the Council of States is a significant milestone for women in Swiss politics. It is a testament to the progress that has been made in recent years in terms of gender equality in Switzerland.
