In the Swiss canton of Ticino, none of the eleven candidates were elected in the first round of the Council of States elections on Sunday. The incumbent Marco Chiesa (SVP) failed to be re-elected. A second round of voting will take place on 19 November. Chiesa received the most votes in the first round with 39,024, followed by centre-national MP Fabio Regazzi (28,749 votes) and FDP national MP Alex Farinelli (27,221 votes). The absolute majority was 51,831 votes. Green national MP Greta Gysin also performed well (22,321 votes), narrowly beating Bruno Storni by around 3,000 votes. Storni was standing for the SP to defend the seat of Marina Carobbio, who was elected to the Ticino government in April, leaving the second Council of States seat vacant. The second round of voting will take place on 19 November.
