The Social Democratic Party of Basel-Stadt (SP Basel-Stadt) has unanimously nominated Beat Jans as their candidate for the successor of Federal Councillor Alain Berset. Jans, 59, announced on September 22nd that he wanted to become a Federal Councillor. Political observers see Jans as one of the favourites for the government post. He has been serving as the President of the Government and Head of the Presidential Department of the Canton of Basel-Stadt since 2021. From 2010 to 2020, he was a National Councillor. During his time as a Federal Parliamentarian, he was Vice President of the SP Switzerland for five years. Besides Jans, Evi Allemann, Roger Nordmann, Matthias Aebischer, Jon Pult and Daniel Jositsch have announced their candidacy for the Federal Council seat. The SP Switzerland faction will nominate the Federal Council ticket on November 25th. Previously, the Basel SP had applied for a Federal Council seat with Councilor Eva Herzog. However, in December 2022, the United Federal Assembly elected Elisabeth Baume-Schneider into the government instead of Herzog.
