The Swiss insurance company Schweizer Hagel has estimated the damage to agricultural crops for the current year to be 22 million francs. The demand for insurance solutions for drought, heavy rain or frost is increasing. The effects of climate change were evident in the company's business year, with damage from storms in addition to drought and flooding. This year's damage of 22 million francs is relatively low compared to the record year of 2021, when hail caused 110 million francs in insured losses, the largest amount in the company's 140-year history.
In order to adapt to climate change, farmers need more than just insurance. They need to adopt practices that are adapted to their location, such as drought-tolerant crops and varieties, soil-conserving planting methods, and efficient water management. Schweizer Hagel has set itself the goal of not only supporting agriculture in adapting to climate change with insurance solutions, but also of raising awareness and promoting adaptation measures, as well as supporting innovative projects and technologies.
