The extraordinary session on asylum demanded by the SVP is to take place in the winter session in December. This was decided by the offices of the National Council and the Council of States. Two equal motions from the SVP and FDP parliamentary groups are up for debate, which call for a correction of the new asylum practice for Afghan women.
Last week, the SVP wanted to drum up parliament because of the motions. Due to the dramatic asylum situation, urgent measures are necessary, said on Friday faction leader Thomas Aeschi (ZG) to the news agency Keystone-SDA.
Aeschi said he had therefore submitted a request for an extraordinary session to the office of the National Council. Such a session can be requested by a quarter of the members of a council. 54 members of the National Council had co-signed the request for an extraordinary session, according to the parliamentary services on Monday.
The offices at the Councils have now decided to hold the extraordinary session in the winter session. When exactly will be decided on November 17 at the meeting of the bureau. The Federal Council has until the winter session to respond to the two requests, according to the parliamentary services. They are not yet ready for discussion.
December treatment
The winter session will take place from December 4 to 22. The SVP would not have wanted to wait that long, but have the councils meet already this week. Specifically, the National Council and the Council of States should have dealt with the two motions next Thursday.
The motions call on the Federal Council to reverse the change exercised since July 17, 2023, with regard to the practice of asylum applications by Afghan women. According to the new practice, applications from Afghan women are examined on a case-by-case basis, but the women are generally granted refugee status.
The new practice is justified by the continuous deterioration in human rights for women in Afghanistan since the Taliban took power. Their basic rights would be severely restricted by restrictions.
