SBB has invested too little in innovation in recent decades, criticizes Ticino National Council member and transport politician Bruno Storni. In the eyes of the SP politician, the wheel damage to the freight car could have been detected and the extent of the accident in the Gotthard Base Tunnel avoided.

The reason for the neglect of the "innovation" area is the liberalization of rail freight transport, Storni explained after the SBB media conference on Thursday in response to a question from the Keystone-SDA news agency.

Liberalization has obliged SBB and other European rail companies to provide self-supporting freight services, Storni further explained. This has led to less investment in innovation, which is now costing SBB "seven kilometers of track".
