The Synod of the Swiss Protestant Reformed Church (EKS) elected Florian Schubert and Michel Rudin to the top management on Monday in Bern. They replace Lilian Bachmann and Claudia Haslebacher, who stepped down from the EHL Council during their term of office.
This means that, alongside EKS President Rita Famos and Vice President Catherine Berger, only men now sit on the seven-member highest body of the Protestant Reformed Church. Pastor Schubert from the canton of Neuchâtel was elected with 63 of the 69 delegate votes of the church parliament, the Synod.
The Lucerne entrepreneur Rudin received 50 votes, as announced by the EKS. The two are elected for the remainder of the term of office until 2026. As Schubert can no longer be Vice President of the Synod as a member of the Council, the synod members elected Michael Bünger as his successor.
Rudin is Co-President of the GLP Canton Lucerne and former Co-President of Pink Cross, a civil rights and self-help organization by and for gay and bisexual men in Switzerland.
In August, Lilian Bachmann announced her resignation at the end of the year due to differences of opinion about the direction of the church. She had only been on the church executive since January.
Claudia Haslebacher was confirmed in office by the Synod in June 2022 and announced her resignation at the end of the year in April this year. The pastor cited personal reasons. She had been a member of the church executive since 2021.
