Cantons welcome negotiating mandate

The Conference of Cantonal Governments (KdK) welcomes the drafting of a mandate for negotiations with the EU by the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs. Bilateral relations must be strengthened and put on a solid footing, the Conference announced on Wednesday.
The KdK was satisfied with the involvement of the cantons. Their participation rights are guaranteed in the constitution. Various cantonal areas of responsibility are affected by the implementation of the bilateral agreements with the EU. The Conference supports the benchmarks set by the Federal Council in the spring.
From the point of view of the cantonal governments, the new negotiations can fulfill several expectations and provide the much-needed legal and planning certainty. Only through successful negotiations could the previous agreements be updated and their gradual erosion eliminated. The aim is to reach agreement on the necessary adjustments to the individual sectoral agreements.
