Some of the Geneva-Lausanne trains are scheduled to run again from 10.45 a.m. on Thursday morning. This was announced by SBB after direct connections between the two cities had to be suspended on Thursday night due to a construction incident.

Frédéric Revaz, SBB media spokesman, told the Keystone-SDA news agency on request that from 10.45 a.m. there would be two trains per hour and direction between Geneva and Lausanne.

On regional services, replacement buses are transporting passengers between Renens VD and Morges VD and between Lausanne and Yverdon-les-Bains VD. SBB announced that longer travel times of up to 30 minutes are to be expected.

On Thursday night, a transmission cable was damaged during maintenance work at Renens VD station. This led to a service interruption between Lausanne and Geneva. In addition to commuter trains, the IC5 and IC1 Inter-City trains and the IR90 Interregio were also affected, according to the SBB website.

The atmosphere at Lausanne station was relatively calm on Thursday morning, as an inspection by the Keystone-SDA news agency showed. Travelers were mainly concerned with how exactly they could get to their destinations - whether by taking a detour by train or a replacement bus.

The rail disruption led to numerous traffic jams on the roads on Thursday morning, particularly in the Lausanne catchment area. In the city of Geneva, the transport company suspended line 9 and put the six buses at the disposal of the SBB.

The incident in Renens VD occurred exactly two years after a track subsidence in Tolochenaz VD, which first stopped rail traffic between Geneva and Lausanne and then disrupted it for several days. The Geneva-Lausanne line is one of the busiest in Switzerland. It is also one of the most fragile because there are no alternative routes.
