The Bern-based health insurer KPT is leaving the health insurers' association Curafutura. KPT justifies the decision, which is to take effect at the end of this year, with "content-related and structural reasons". Curafutura regrets the decision.
In recent years, however, it has become increasingly clear that membership of the association in the current structures is no longer expedient for KPT, KPT announced on Friday. In response to an inquiry from Keystone-SDA, it said that the different health policy orientations had become increasingly accentuated in recent months.
In addition, the ongoing trench warfare between the two health insurance associations - Curafutura and Santésuisse - would do enormous damage to the industry's credibility. The most recent example is the "Uniform financing of outpatient and inpatient care" (Efas). They see little momentum towards improving the situation and are therefore leaving. A change to the health insurance association Santésuisse is not an issue. KPT will remain a member of the Swiss Insurance Association.
Partnership-based dialog desired
Founded in 1890 in the form of a cooperative of railroad workers as an occupational health insurance fund, KPT refers in its press release to "urgently needed reforms in the healthcare system". In this situation, "it would be crucial for the industry to close ranks on important health policy issues". They would like to see more partnership-based dialog again - in the interests of the industry and the insured.
KPT, which is organized as a cooperative, continues to uphold the fundamental pillars of the Swiss healthcare system and underlines in particular the importance of a functioning tariff partnership, the press release continued.
Curafutura regrets decision
Curafutura notes the withdrawal of KPT with regret, as stated in a press release. The association wants to continue to drive reforms with 40 percent of insured persons. Curafutura mentions Efas and the new Tardoc individual benefits tariff, which is now supported by all tariff partners.
According to its own figures, KPT has almost 600,000 insured persons and generated premium income of CHF 1.7 billion in 2020 with over 600 employees. KPT joined Curafutura in 2013.
