Participants in the study will be able to purchase various products such as cannabis flowers, cannabis resin or liquids with different THC and CBD contents in selected pharmacies from February 2024. According to the press release, the names of the pharmacies will not be published for safety reasons.

The study will be conducted in the three cities of Bern, Biel and Lucerne. A total of around 1,000 participants will be enrolled, including around 700 in Bern and 170 in Biel. Enrolment in the city of Lucerne with around 250 participants is scheduled to follow in 2024, according to the University of Bern.

Study team expects a rush

Participation is open to persons of legal age who are resident in the canton of Bern and already use cannabis regularly. Based on experience from ongoing pilot studies, the study team assumes that more people will register for the study than can be included. In this case, priority will be given to people living in the cities of Bern and Biel.

The aim of the study led by the University of Bern and called Script (“Safer Cannabis – Research In Pharmacies randomized controlled trial”) is to investigate the health and social effects of regulated cannabis sales. Advertising is not permitted and the products must be packaged in a neutral and standardized way.
