The Center Party will not accept any representatives of the Mouvement Citoyens Genevois (MCG). In contrast, the Center Party has decided to continue the parliamentary grouping with the Evangelical People's Party (EPP).
The decision regarding the MCG was unanimous, said Center President Gerhard Pfister on Friday at a point de presse at the Federal Palace in Bern. The conclusion had been reached that the political positions of the two parties were too far apart.
Mauro Poggia, the newly elected member of the MCG Council of States from Geneva, was particularly interested in joining the Center Group. He began his political career with the former CVP.
Pfister said that the parliamentary group leaders from the center had physically met with Poggia once, and that they had been in "constant and lively exchange" until the parliamentary group meeting on Friday.
The two MCG National Councillors, Roger Golay and Daniel Sormanni, want to join the SVP parliamentary group. In this context, the Center President spoke of too different signals from the MCG. He also pointed out that, according to the law, all members of a party in the federal parliament must belong to the same parliamentary group.
