Skills shortage reaches new record level in 2023

The shortage of qualified specialists has become even more acute this year. According to the skills shortage index published by recruitment agency Adecco, the situation is more serious than ever before.
Specifically, the shortage of skilled workers, as measured by the personnel service provider, has risen by 24 percent year-on-year despite the current economic downturn, according to a press release issued on Tuesday. The hospitality industry and companies in the healthcare and engineering sectors are finding it particularly difficult to fill vacancies.
This development is mainly due to the fact that the number of job seekers has decreased significantly and at the same time the number of job vacancies has increased by 7% compared to the previous year. The domestic sector was particularly affected by this.
Meanwhile, the shortage of skilled workers is increasingly turning into a general labor shortage. For example, the supply of personnel in occupational groups with lower qualification requirements has also been greatly reduced: "What we are experiencing on the Swiss labor market today is an actual labor shortage and no longer a shortage of skilled workers," Martin Meyer, Head of Adecco German-speaking Switzerland, is quoted as saying in the press release.
