It has turned white in many places on the Central Plateau

Snowfall down to the lowlands caused traffic disruptions on Thursday morning. Where there was enough snow cover on the Central Plateau, most places had less than ten centimetres of snow.
While the snow line rose rapidly in the south-west of Switzerland during the morning, it snowed in the very north of Switzerland - from Aargau to Lake Constance - until midday, the weather service Meteonews wrote in its blog shortly after 1.00 pm. The snow line will also rise to over 1000 meters above sea level in these regions.
From the canton of Fribourg via Bern and Solothurn to Aargau, more than 10 centimeters of snow fell in some places, according to Meteonews.
The most snow fell in the western Alps: in the lower Valais, there was up to half a meter of snow locally, although only at altitudes above around 1000 meters above sea level. 10 to 20 centimetres of snow also fell in places in the Jura and the western foothills of the Alps.
Due to the snowfall, the Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF), based in Davos GR, has raised the avalanche warning level for western Lower Valais to 4, the second-highest danger level: according to the experts, there is a high avalanche risk there. In large parts of the Alpine region, the avalanche danger is considerable, with a warning level of 3.
The onset of winter led to problems on the roads, particularly in the cantons of Bern and Lucerne: by 11.30 a.m., the Bern cantonal police had counted 70 accidents, as they reported on request. Ten of the accidents resulted in injuries. The Bern-Mittelland region, Emmental, Oberaargau, Bernese Jura and Bernese Seeland were particularly affected.
The Lucerne police counted at least nine accidents. In Alberswil LU, a 24-year-old drove his car off the snow-covered road and landed in a stream. According to the police, no one was seriously injured.
