After further snowfall in Switzerland, traffic also came to a standstill on Sunday morning, especially in eastern Switzerland. In places, there was more fresh snow in the past few hours than ever before so early in the winter.
The record was broken by Elm GL with 48 centimetres of snow on Saturday morning, Chur with 28 centimetres and Zurich Fluntern with 26 centimetres, according to the private weather service Meteonews on Sunday.
In the lowlands, there was also a bitterly cold night in places. According to Meteonews, the temperature in Zurich-Kloten dropped to minus 12.9 degrees. The last time it was this cold was on February 14, 2021. The lowest temperature in the monitoring network was minus 22.9 degrees in Buffalora in the municipality of GR. Samedan GR and La Brévine NE also recorded temperatures above minus 20 degrees (-21.1 and -20.6 degrees respectively).
Eastern Switzerland with rail problems
As on the previous day, the weather conditions caused problems for rail traffic, particularly in eastern Switzerland on Sunday. Traffic was restricted at Rorschach SG station due to a catenary fault and no trains ran between Kreuzlingen TG and Constance. According to SBB, the St. Margrethen SG-Munich line was also restricted. According to Deutsche Bahn, the disruptions to rail services in southern Germany will continue until at least Monday.
According to SBB, rail traffic between Schaffhausen and Singen in Germany was also disrupted on Sunday morning. The reason for this was a fallen tree and the disruption was expected to last until late afternoon.
The Rhaetian Railway also initially had to contend with the large amounts of snow on Sunday. On the Albula line, the route between Thusis and Tiefencastel was interrupted due to a catenary fault. Rail replacement buses were in operation. There was no replacement transport for the interrupted route between Davos and Filisur. The lines were reopened around midday on Sunday.
35 centimeters of snow on the car roof
No major accidents due to snow and ice had been reported by midday on Sunday. However, in the city of St. Gallen, for example, there were 19 reports against drivers who had insufficiently cleared their vehicles of snow. In most cases, the snow depth was more than 20 centimetres, the city police reported on Sunday. One car roof had a 35-centimeter-high snow load. The drivers were only allowed to continue driving after the car roof had been cleaned. All drivers who were checked were reported to the police.
