Storm and gale-force winds sweep across Switzerland

Gale-force winds swept across Switzerland on Friday night. The wind peaks reached over 180 kilometers per hour in the mountains, as the weather service Meteonews reported on Friday.

According to Meteonews, the frontrunner was the Gornergrat VS with peak wind speeds of 184 kilometers per hour, followed by the Jungfraujoch BE with wind speeds of up to 181 kilometers per hour.

It was also stormy in the lowlands during the night. Wind speeds of 95 km/h were measured in Lucerne, while winds of up to 93 km/h were recorded at Zurich Airport, according to Meteonews.

Storm Pia is forecast to bring strong gusts until Saturday. According to the weather service SRF Meteo on Friday morning, the wind will weaken somewhat in many places on Friday afternoon.

There have also been large amounts of fresh snow in the mountains. The federal government has raised the avalanche danger in the Alps to the second-highest danger level 4 (great danger).
