The Swiss Greens were disappointed with the failure of National Councillor Gerhard Andrey (Greens/FR). Andrey received 59 votes, while Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis (FDP) was re-elected with 167 votes.
The Swiss Green Party met on Wednesday morning in the city of Bern at the Café Lehrerzimmer to follow the Federal Council elections. After the result was announced, there was silence at first and those present were dismayed, as a reporter told the Keystone-SDA news agency. Around forty people followed the election.
Margot Chauderna, Co-President of the Young Greens Switzerland, said after the results were announced that the ruling parties' power cartel had been confirmed with this result. Andrey was a good candidate. Parliament is afraid of change.
The Fribourg candidate received fewer votes than expected, said Julien Vuilleumier, Co-President of the Fribourg Greens. No party had fully backed Andrey's candidacy. In this context, however, the result can be described as "good". Vuilleumier does not expect the Greens to contest the FDP's second seat.
