The newly elected Federal Councillor Beat Jans wants to put the well-being of the population at the heart of his work in the national government. He will do his utmost to ensure that everyone can lead a good life.
Switzerland is a fascinating country, said the SP politician in his acceptance speech on Wednesday. It is a country of strong communities - where people across cultural and linguistic boundaries have agreed to move forward together and draw strength from diversity.
"We should build on this," said the former President of the Basel City Government. Jans pleaded for a Switzerland in which everyone could act according to their abilities for the good of the community - regardless of gender, wealth or background. Switzerland should use its prosperity to alleviate suffering in the world, to respect human rights, to promote democracy and to preserve the natural foundations of life.
Jans emphasized that the challenges of the present, which is characterized by crises, can only be overcome with compromises. "My doors are always open to you," he said, addressing the members of the Federal Assembly.
Jans ended his speech by thanking his family, employees and companions.
