Following Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin's suspension of mediation between the social partners regarding the abusive dismissal of trade unionists, the trade union Unia has gone on the offensive. On Monday, it announced a popular initiative on protection against dismissal.
Unia told the media in Bern on Monday that the failure of the mediation was due to the "irresponsible attitude of the employers' association and the discouragement of the Federal Council". It spoke of a "declaration of bankruptcy in view of the employers' refusal".
Unia recalled that the International Labor Organization (ILO) had placed Switzerland on its blacklist of the 40 most worrying cases of violations of ILO conventions in 2019.
On Monday morning, the Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research (EAER) announced that its head, Mr. Parmelin, had temporarily suspended mediation between the social partners regarding the abusive dismissal of trade unionists. The reason given was that an amicable solution was currently not possible and that resources were needed for the EU dossier.
On the employers' side, the Swiss Employers' Association (SAV) said it supported the Federal Council's decision. The SAV also shares the Federal Council's assessment that the social partners are not yet close to a rapid conclusion of the mediation talks. As things stand, the talks have only been suspended and not broken off.
