A fire in a garage near Geneva Airport disrupted air, road and rail traffic on Tuesday. The fire broke out at around 4 p.m. in Vernier GE and was only brought under control hours later. A worker who was in the garage when the fire broke out suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to hospital for a check-up.
According to SBB, train services were interrupted until 7.30 pm. Take-offs at Geneva Airport were also stopped for ten minutes due to the risk of explosion, as Ignace Jeannerat, spokesman for Geneva Airport, explained. The Route de Meyrin had to be closed to motorists at the airport.
Ten hoses, 70 firefighters from the professional and volunteer fire departments, including the SBB team with the fire and rescue train, and six men from the airport were mobilized to fight the fire. Three ambulances were also sent to the scene.
