Sales of electric cars boomed in Switzerland at the end of the year. Never before have so many electric cars been sold in relation to the overall market as in December 2023, as the industry association Swiss Emobility announced on Monday.

In December alone, there were 7,185 new registrations of battery electric plug-in vehicles. This means that 163,511 electric cars were registered on Swiss roads at the beginning of the year. Ten years ago, the figure was 2700.

Around one in three new vehicles now has a plug. For the third year in a row, the Tesla Model Y was the best-selling electric car in Switzerland.

The market share of battery electric cars rose from 17.3% to 20.9% last year. In contrast, the market share of fossil combustion engines fell from 37.8% to 33.3% for petrol and from 11.7% to 9.3% for diesel.

In 2023, around 4,000 public charging stations were also added in Switzerland. This means that 16,865 publicly accessible charging infrastructures are available for electric cars. According to experts, Switzerland therefore has one of the densest charging networks in the world.

Nevertheless, the industry association fears that Switzerland could lose out on electromobility. Growth is below expectations. Many European countries are growing significantly faster than Switzerland, particularly in Scandinavia and the Benelux countries. Switzerland is likely to fall out of the top 10 countries. With the introduction of the car import tax for electric cars, Switzerland abolished the only market entry facilitation as of January 1.
