Rail traffic between Brig VS and the northern Italian town of Domodossola will be running normally again from this Thursday. Italy has extended the implementation deadline for the required new fire protection measures for railroad tunnels by one year.

SBB announced on Wednesday that it had received written confirmation from the Italian Ministry of Transport and the Italian transport authority that the Domino and EW IV vehicle types had been approved for the Brig-Domodossola route. The IC and IR connections can therefore be resumed in both directions.

It was announced on Friday that 38 weekly Intercity and Interregio train connections between Domodossola and Brig would have to be temporarily suspended from January 1 due to the lack of approval from Italy.

According to SBB, a new fire protection regulation for the passage through longer tunnels should come into force at the beginning of 2024. Due to border traffic agreements between Switzerland and Italy, the SBB Domino and EW IV trains used on the Simplon line were previously exempt from this directive. The implementation deadline for the new fire safety regulations has now been extended until the beginning of 2025.

Fourth EU rail package

Due to the pending adaptation of the border traffic agreement to the fourth railroad package, written confirmation from the Italian authorities was required for the approval of these two vehicle types for the journey between Brig and Domodossola.

With the fourth railroad package, the EU is aiming to create a single European railroad area. The fragmented European rail network with different safety standards and technical systems is to be standardized, as the European Council writes on its website.
