As recently as 2020, the WEF organizers threatened to move the event out of Davos GR because of free riders during the World Economic Forum. Today, they no longer want to know anything about it.
"Last year it was quite difficult, but this year we were able to credibly show the people of Davos that we cannot stay in Davos in the long term if the situation does not improve," said WEF Managing Director Alois Zwinggi in an interview with the SonntagsZeitung. "This has obviously come to pass and now we are doing well with the hotels." So the WEF wants to stay in Davos.
The reason for the organizers' displeasure in the past was the increasing number of organizations that hold parallel events during the WEF but have nothing to do with the World Economic Forum. According to Zwinggi, this also caused annoyance among vacation guests. However, the municipality now regulates temporary structures for such events.
Four years ago, Zwinggi said: "The situation with free riders has not improved in recent years. That's a big problem for us." At some point, the moment will come when these uninvited guests will bring the Davos ecosystem to a standstill. "Then we may be forced to leave Davos." The problem of increasingly congested roads and a sometimes angry population is not mainly to do with the WEF. The number of participants at the forum has remained constant in recent years, Zwinggi said at the time. "What has grown is the whole parallel universe around us."
