Several people in hospital after streetcar derailment in Bern

A streetcar derailed at Kornhausplatz in Bern on Thursday morning. Several people had to be taken to hospital for a check-up, but no one was seriously injured. Traffic in the city was severely disrupted for hours.
The exact cause of the accident is being investigated. According to the police, a medical problem on the part of the streetcar driver cannot be ruled out.
According to them, the streetcar on line 7 was traveling from Casinoplatz in the direction of the train station shortly after 7 am. It derailed on the bend in front of the Zytglogge. The streetcar then skidded onto Kornhausplatz, where it came to a halt next to the tracks near the Chindlifresserbrunnen fountain.
One passenger was slightly injured in the accident, the police reported. The woman was attended to by paramedics at the scene. The streetcar driver and a passer-by were taken to hospital for a check-up. A spokesperson for Bernmobil told the Keystone-SDA news agency that two people were slightly injured, including the streetcar driver.
Kornhausplatz is an important public transport hub in Bern's city center. Traffic was severely disrupted for hours due to the extensive recovery work. Commuters had to be patient.
Material damage
According to the police, a Bernmobil power line, a ticket machine, benches and traffic signs were damaged. In addition to the police, the professional fire department, two ambulance teams from Berne Protection and Rescue and employees from various Bernmobil departments were deployed.
The accident is being investigated in cooperation with the Swiss Transportation Safety Investigation Board (STSB).
