Confederation wants to reduce hospital infections with national roadmap

The federal government, cantons and hospitals want to take action against infections in hospitals with new measures. The national roadmap published on Tuesday aims to reduce the number of infections in hospitals by a third by 2035.
Around six percent of all patients in Swiss hospitals suffer an infection during their hospital stay, as the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) writes in a press release. This puts our country in the European midfield. According to the FOPH's roadmap, this figure is to be reduced to five percent by 2030 and to four percent by 2035.
According to the FOPH, wound infections after surgical procedures and blood poisoning in particular are often associated with serious consequences. However, the lungs and urinary tract are also at risk after a medical procedure and are susceptible to infections.
Specifically, the roadmap provides for various monitoring and prevention tools. These include, for example, entry training for all new employees, as well as certain monitoring systems. According to the FOPH, individual hospitals must now set their own targets and priorities based on the national roadmap.
