In the Ticino municipal elections on April 14, almost everything revolves around Lugano, where former SVP President Marco Chiesa is running for a seat on the executive. In Locarno and Ascona, there will be changes in the city and municipal presidencies respectively.
It remains to be seen whether Chiesa will also run for mayor if he does well in the elections. The current president of the largest city in Ticino is Michele Foletti from the Lega dei Ticinesi.
Although the SVP and Lega are presenting a joint list in Lugano, they are rivals in the race for the office of mayor. The question of whether there could be a change at the top of the city government has been the subject of much discussion and heated debate in recent weeks and months.
In the parliamentary elections in Ticino a year ago, the SVP made gains, while the Lega lost seats in the Grand Council. But so far, Switzerland's largest party has hardly ever been able to transfer its victories in the legislature tel quel to the executive. Sunday will show whether this rule also applies in Ticino.
Neue "Sindaci" in Locarno und Ascona
In total, new executives will be elected in 81 municipalities and new legislatures in 80 municipalities in Ticino. In the remaining municipalities, there are silent elections or the elections have been postponed. In some municipalities, there are also municipal assemblies instead of municipal parliaments.
A new era is being ushered in in two major towns in Locarno. In the film city of Locarno, Alain Scherrer (FDP) is no longer standing for election after nine years. In Ascona, a successor is being sought for Luca Pissoglio. The politician, who also belongs to the FDP, served as mayor for 12 years.
At the top of the cantonal capital of Bellinzona, however, everything will most likely remain the same: Mayor Mario Branda (SP) is standing for a fourth term of office after 12 years. However, his deputy Simone Gianini from the FDP, who was elected to the National Council in October, has announced his resignation.
