Swiss airports recorded a total of 53.3 million passengers on scheduled and charter flights in 2023. This represents an increase of 22% compared to the previous year, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) on Friday.

In absolute figures, 9.7 million more passengers were recorded in civil aviation than in 2022. Nevertheless, passenger volumes were still nine percent below the level of 2019, the year before the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, as the FSO reported.

The number of flight movements - i.e. take-offs and landings - also increased in 2023 compared to the previous year: 15 percent more flight movements were recorded, totaling 408,957. According to the FSO, flight movements were therefore also below the level of the pre-pandemic year 2019. In comparison, 13 percent fewer flight movements were still recorded in 2023.

In contrast to passenger transport, freight transport fell in 2023 compared to 2022: the number of tons transported fell by two percent - compared to 2019, there were even 20 percent fewer freight transports.
