Bernese musician Andreas Schärer reaps laurels in Paris

The Académie française du Jazz has honored Bernese musician Andreas Schärer with the Prix du Musicien européen. The award ceremony took place on Monday evening in Montrouge near Paris.

Andreas Schärer has a broad musical background. He works with various techniques, such as spoken word, beatboxing and scat. The singer, who was born in Visp in 1976, is the frontman of the band "Hildegard Lernt Fliegen" and is engaged as a guest soloist all over the world.

He also writes music for his own projects, as well as for classical ensembles and contemporary formations. He has been teaching singing and composition at the Bern University of Music since 2010, as he writes on his website. Schärer released his latest album "Evolution" last September.

The Académie also honored the 39-year-old pianist, composer and singer Grégory Privat with the Prix Django Reinhardt 2023, the highest award for a French musician. According to the AFP news agency, Grégory Privat, who was born in Martinique, is the fourth Caribbean musician among a total of 71 award winners.

The Prix du Disque Français went to pianist, conductor and arranger Laurent Cugny for "Tentet Zeitgeist", and the Grand Prix de l'Académie du Jazz for the best record of 2023 went to Cuban pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba and alto saxophonist Pierrick Pédron for their duo CD "Gazebo".

The African-American singer Billy Valentine received the award as a blues-soul-gospel artist for his cover album "And the Universal Truth".
