The city of La Chaux-de-Fonds NE wants to invest 69 million francs in a project for a new ice rink. This will have 5810 seats, including a grandstand with just over 2220 seats behind one of the two goals and a second enclosed, covered rink in the smaller format of the North American ice hockey rinks.
"It is a showcase project for an entire generation," said City Council President Jean-Daniel Jeanneret to the media on Wednesday. The building is intended to enable the traditional La Chaux-de-Fonds club, which became Swiss champions six times in the 1960s and 70s, to renew its historic infrastructure.
For around 20 years, the men of the ice hockey club have been playing in Switzerland's second-highest division, while the women play in the third division. The "Patinoire des Mélèzes" was built in 1953 and renovated in 2012.
The two future ice rinks will be located at the current site. The floor slab of the main ice rink will be the only part of the building that will not be renovated due to its good condition. The energy company Viteos will be involved in the project as an investor for the energy system.
The new building complex will also be connected to the renovated swimming pool and Gallet Park. It will be located close to the city center, public transport and the future bypass highway.
