President Viola Amherd met Romanian President Klaus Iohannis in Bucharest on Wednesday. The heads of state discussed the Ukraine peace conference planned by Switzerland, the security situation in Europe and relations between Switzerland and the EU.

On Thursday, Amherd will meet Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, as announced by the Federal Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS). On X (formerly Twitter), Amherd described relations with Romania as "excellent".

At a meeting with Finance Minister Marcel Bolos on Wednesday, Amherd spoke about the implementation program for the second Swiss cohesion contribution to selected EU states, among other things. The bilateral agreement with Romania on this was signed in 2022.

It provides for Switzerland to support Romania in terms of economic growth, public safety, the social system and civil society involvement. CHF 221.5 million has been earmarked for this purpose.

Amherd will also be attending the meeting of the European People's Party (EPP) in Bucharest on Thursday, to whose party family Amherd's centrist party belongs. At the party congress, the EPP will finalize the nomination of EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for a second term of office.
