The UN Human Rights Office says it has credible reports that Palestinians arrested in Israeli custody have been mistreated. These include doctors and other hospital staff, said Ajith Sunghay, head of the UN Human Rights Office for the Occupied Palestinian Territories, on Friday. "They were also mistreated, I can say that with a fair degree of certainty," Sunghay said. He was in East Jerusalem and spoke to reporters in Geneva via a video link. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 118 health workers are still in Israeli custody.
Sunghay also cited a previously unpublished report by the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinians (UNRWA) on the treatment of Palestinians in Israeli custody. He had seen the report. "The report is about mistreatment and possibly acts that constitute torture," he said. The content coincided with information that his office had also gathered. Those affected had reported sleep deprivation and exposure to loud noise, as well as a lack of food and medical care. The report also contains allegations of torture and sexualized violence.
